There was a virtual meetup to talk with Ensoniq Co-Founder ALBERT
CHARPENTIER

“Apple made a great decision in 1986 to release the IIGS with audio
capabilities that completely blew away those offered by other 16-bit
personal computers. The quality and scope of the IIGS's Ensoniq 5503
digital synthesizer chip are evident once you start listening to music
being pumped out of the computer.”

“If you've got a technical fascination with the sound chip responsible for
all that wonderful music, please attend this upcoming interactive Zoom
meeting with Albert Charpentier, one of the co-founders of Ensoniq. Mr.
Charpentier blazed a trail by designing video chips for Commodore's
best-selling home computers, before breaking out and co-founding Ensoniq
with a group of fellow engineers.”

This interview is available to review on YouTube. There are brief mentions
of the ensoniq design (8 channels based on video chip design; memory
playback design to facilitate emulating a piano; Apple paid for royalties
for IIgs usage with one cheque up front.) from 27:00-40:00 ish
