Is anyone else finding it impossible to use the VidHD with a 4:3 aspect ratio
monitor? John's latest firmware fixed a lot of sync issues, but display is
shifted too far right to be usable on any / all of my "square" monitors.

Since I have no wide-screen monitors to spare for Apple 2 display (as opposed
to about a dozen 4:3 units) this is obviously important to me.

Where is the latest firmware update available? How does one determine firmware version?

Do any of your 'square' monitors allow 1920x1080 resolution?
The manual states that the VidHD only outputs 1920x1080. I was unaware
of this myself when I ordered the VidHD. None of my monitors (even the
wide ones) support that high of a resolution. I was due for a new
monitor so I bought an inexpensive one that has both HDMI and VGA input
and 1920x1080 resolution. That way I can use it for both my PC and IIgs.
The video from the VidHD on the new monitor is very good.

No, since they are 4:3 that's not an available option. I didn't realize this
unit was strictly for 16:9 monitors.

I've mentioned the issue to John Brooks, but he said nothing about this
limitation.

Isn't the whole purpose of the VidHD card to make older Apple II computers work with "modern" widescreen display monitors and TV's? 4:3 is "old technology" so use an "old technology" 4:3 interface method for your 4:3 display monitors; and send your VidHD back for a refund; and quit complaining!

Its purpose is to allow using an Apple II with an HDMI input equipped
device. Ideally that should apply to 4:3 monitors as well--especially
since the II has a (roughly) 4:3 output, and many of us have 4:3
monitors knocking about.

Given all the weird things that can be done with the video output under
Linux, i'm inclined to believe that it's possible; and hopefully it will
happen, eventually. :)

The purpose was to add HDMI to the Apple II. HDMI also connects to DVI
through a passive adapter, which opens up lots of old(ish) computer monitors
as possible targets...and many of them aren't widescreen. (More than a few
are actually 5:4, not 4:3.)

Thanks for your pleasant response, James. I'm not complaining, nor did John
(in private communications with me) take it that way.
