There's now a clean crack of Avalon Hill fantasy-strategy game "Fortress Of The Witch King" on asimov:

./images/games/adventure/fortress_of_the_witch_king/Fortress of the Witch King (clean crack).zip

I bought a boxed, never-opened copy of it off ebay in a couple of years ago. I recently opened it, and Jon Co archived the mouldy disk to an image.

Since the core of Fortress is written in Applesoft BASIC and easily alterable, I'd never been able to verify whether the various copies of it that were floating around had been changed. I suspected most had. So now there's a copy with the original presentation and original game logic in place.

I'm sure the Apple II Gamers community thanks you, but opening the package probably reduced its value to 1/10th of its worth to collectors.

I'm pretty sure Wade's objective was not to make an investment in a
collectible box. His objective seems to have been to give a present to
himself and to the Apple II community at the same time - at which he has
succeeded very nicely indeed.

This reminds me of what happened when Puto and I put together a release of
the entire series of Dragon Ball Z with the original broadcast audio which
we got off some collectors. The comments on the release post were almost
entirely from butthurt collectors angry that we slaughtered their golden
goose.

Or the people who fight against new hardware development like accelerators
and Transwarp clones, and the Yellowstone controller that would have worked
in-place of a Liron 3.5" card for the Unidisk.

The Apple II community absolutely DOES NOT need people like this. We are
BETTER OFF WITHOUT people who talk down and fight new developments solely to
protect their "collectible" obsolete junk.

Yeah, I don't get that. I mean, that is the absolute spirit of the Apple II community that Woz wanted! Community of hackers creating their own stuff for the Apple II. Hardware and software.

If they don't like modern gadgets running on their equipment, then they need to just ignore them.

If anything, they should be happy you opened it. By "de-valuing" your item, you increased the value of their collection. :-D

Seriously, I know what you mean. If I had a brand-new, Apple II (orignal), un-opened in box...I would sell it to those butthurt collectors (LOL...butthurt...) and take the money to buy me a "less valuable" Apple II+ in great condition. That, and a nice steak dinner with the misses.

That's absolutely asinine and completely ridiculous of course. Those people should rot in hell with their precious unopened "collectables".

I thank the OP for preserving and achiving an important item. We, who are hobbyists and original users actually get enjoyment out of these games as the publishers originally intended. We're not about paying $1000 for a god damned box or hoarding things to flip later to rapacious "collectors" who destroy our hobby.

Thanks again. May your kind open many more original boxes in the divine efforts at archiving, preservation and sheer enjoyment!

I'm glad you dit it, too. I am not a gamer nor a collector. I was just pointing out one consequence of your action. [Watching the Antiques Roadshow makes me wonder why collectors will pay so much for something that I wouldn't give >$1 for.]

I was surprised to return today to see 9 responses. I thought 'What could everyone be talking about?' :)

Yes, I didn't buy it as an investment. I bought it so I/we could get a pristine copy of the game saved. I became interested in this game in particular when I wrote a FAQ on it a fair few years back. And doing the digging required to write the FAQ is what made me pretty sure the copies I had been working off had probably been altered.

A personal plus for me is I love the box art for this one. So now I own the original box (I'm guilty of collectorism there) and that's a side-benefit for me of just saving the game. I feel like whenever one's personal interest in a game or games coincides with needed preservation efforts, that's a great time to help.

I'm one of those Apple IIers who's largely given up on using real 5.25 floppies anymore. I've just had ceaseless problems with unclean disks, cleaning disks, unclean drives and cleaning and repairing drives. That's why I asked Jon Co to do the transfer for me. And also because he's great at all that kind of stuff!

I poked about via Google a bit for an FAQ but no luck. Is your document online anywhere? I'm interested to read it.

The FAQ's home is gamefaqs.com:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/appleii/960469-fortress-of-the-witch-king/faqs

It has a lot of formulas from the game in it, but some of it might be out of whack in general when using the original copy of the game. I wrote it based on the hacks, which was all I previously had.

Good job - interesting and well written, thanks! Makes me want to play the game now.
